Tummy Tuck Q & A

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, surgically tightens your midsection in cases where diet and exercise haven’t succeeded. You may not be able to get a flatter tummy due to excess skin and stubborn fat leftover from weight loss, pregnancy, or the aging process. Dr. Onyewu uses a tummy tuck to get you a smoother, firmer tummy.

What is the process involved in a tummy tuck?

You’re put under general anesthesia during the procedure but go home the same day. The entire procedure may take two to four hours.

During the procedure, Dr. Onyewu creates an incision along your lower pubic area. Scarring will then disappear under your bikini line. He lifts any loose abdominal skin to expose your muscle, which he tightens and stitches into a new position. Excess skin is trimmed, and Dr. Onyewu then sutures the incision closed. He re-attaches your belly button in a place to match your new, flatter stomach.

Dr. Onyewu may also perform liposuction to remove any excess fat tissue in the area.

After the surgery, Dr. Onyewu dresses the incision sites and wraps your belly and torso in a compression garment to help the healing process. You may have small tubes placed to drain blood and other fluids from the surgical area.

You’re only sent home when the team determines you’re stable and ready to heal at home.

What is recovery from a tummy tuck like?

Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but most people can leave their house the day following the procedure. You can resume work from home within a few days and should plan to be back at an office job within two weeks. If you have a job that requires lifting or lots of standing, you may need three to six weeks off for a full recovery. Exercise is limited for a few months. Talk to Dr. Onyewu about your particular limitations and how to ease activity back in.
