Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure with a high satisfaction rating. It literally suctions unwanted fat from your body, including areas such as the:

  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Chin and neck
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
  • Calves and ankles
  • Back

At Jamachi Plastic Surgery, Dr. Onyewu offers traditional liposuction, laser liposuction, and Smartlipo®. During traditional liposuction, the doctor inserts a cannula, a thin tube that manually loosens and then suctions the unwanted fat out of your body. Laser liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a laser to melt away fat under the skin.

Smartlipo involves a medical device that performs laser-assisted liposuction. The Smartlipo procedure simultaneously tightens the skin around the area from which fat is removed, contributing to an overall smooth, contoured shape.

What happens during liposuction?

You may be placed under general or localized anesthesia for liposuction. It really depends on the procedure performed and the extent of the liposuction.

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so you go home the same day. Expect the entire process to last one to three hours.

Dr. Onyewu makes small incisions in your skin and inserts the cannula; he uses the cannula or the laser assistance to loosen the fat, which is then suctioned out.

When your procedure is complete, Dr. Onyewu removes the cannula and closes the small incision with a suture.

What is recovery like after liposuction?

You’ll be given comprehensive aftercare instructions to recover at home. You’ll most likely feel a little sore in the days following and may have some swelling and bruising in the treatment areas.

In most cases, over-the-counter pain relievers help you manage any discomfort. You should be walking around the day after your liposuction. You can expect to return to work and regular daily activities in about five days, but you should avoid exercise and vigorous activity until Dr. Onyewu clears you.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

If you’re within 30% of your ideal body weight but have pockets of fat in areas such as your abdomen or thighs, liposuction may be a good option for you. Liposuction is not an answer if you need comprehensive weight loss.

Following liposuction, you need to continue to make healthy choices to maintain your new, slim silhouette.
